Pop music has not always been deemed as appealing to just youngsters. In the 1920's the term pop music come about and abbreviated the word popular. At this time the more popular music was jazz based music and it mainly appealed to much older people, who went to dances ect. However much higher class people listened to music rather then lower class due to they had the money to afford radios and to go to discos.
This all changed when it come to the 1970's disco music was much more popular and appealed to a much younger age range who went clubbing and raves, type of songs were 'play that funky music', 'rock the boat' and 'dont stop 'til you get enough. This era a lot more people were listening to music due to it was much more easier to access music and it wasn't deemed as posh anymore.
When it got to the 90's pop music blew up and become a very very popular genre and there was not specific type of music that was involved. Music by artists such as 2Pac, Oasis and Snoop Dog was very popular.
To this day and age pop music has evolved and is mainly focused on teenagers and very similar boppy music. Artists such as 'The Vamps, Justin Bieber and One Direction are very popular. This has evolved over time and the target audience has changed over time.
