Focus Group Video

Focus Group Answers

From our test footage, what impact do you think our camera techniques will have on our music video?
Close ups and over the shoulder shots make the video much more personal. Also allows the audience easily identify who the main character will be in the main video. Also by us using long shots of the locations we have been at will allow the audience to identify any known landmarks of the place.  However adding in a 360 degree shot will allow a wider shot shown of the location and also give the location at a different perspective.

Do you think the locations used in our test footage is relevant to our genre and narrative?
Iconography in the test footage does show the conventions of the genre but also helps the audience distinguish a known location and setting, this could potentially create a wider audience. Also due to it being filmed in a capital city makes it more known to international audiences as they will recognise the landmarks.

Can you see any pop genre, codes and conventions?
Lip syncing is what is conventional of the pop genre that was identified. Also the artists outfit is very fashionable which is also conventional of the genre

Do you believe our artists name, Marcus Matthews is generic of the pop genre?
The alliteration of the letter 'M' makes the name easy to remember and its also very catchy.

Audition 2

Our second audition was with Jamie who is in our group. He again also showed a lack of confidence in his audition by having his head to the floor most of the time, also his lip syncing was out of time in some places showing a lack of consistency in the audition. Also Jamie failed to have a connection with the camera which would become an issue with the audience engaging with him as a artist. The positive would be the same as Will's due to his age would be more relatable for our target audience.

Audition 1

This is one of the first auditions that we conducted and using the first chorus of 'Get Down' and firstly you instantly notice the lack of confidence Will is showing the camera, there is no emotion in his face and his head is constantly facing the floor throughout the audition. The audience wouldn't be able to have a connection with the artist due to him not engaging with the camera in the audition. One of the positives of this audition is the age of Will and how this would be relatable for our target audience as he is 17.

Advert Mood Board

Here I have created a mood board of the current inspirations of what we can use to influence our ideas. I have mainly used the binary opposites of the urban locations and the rural locations. This will help us start to plan location ideas for our music video. Also Banksey has been involved due to it being found mainly in urban locations.

Production Diary 6

Throughout this month we need to end up deciding what genre of music to have. Overall our group have decided on doing pop genre. Initially we were going to do R&B / Grime music however we decided on pop genre as we thought it would be a new challenge as not all of us in our group listen to pop music.

We also decided on a song which was James Arthur 'Get Down'

Production Diary

We recently had a visit from a director called Jamie Thraves. He is a British film director and writer. He gave us a great insight into the industry, he spoke about many main aspects in the film industry such as things like funding and problems he has had in the past. Also spoke about some of his successes throughout his career. This was very helpful for us as it gave us an insight and made us much more aware of the industry

Production Diary 4

I have been looking at many different theories over the past few days throughout the production process. This has helped me look at applying these to my work. Also I have looked at different music video categories to see what categories that our music video would fall into. From discussing this with the group and what I have found we have decided that our music video will be a mix of performance and narrative based music video. We believe that this would be suitable for the lyrics and the current ideas for our music videos.

Copyright Permission letter

Here below is our groups copyright letter to Syco Music Records having permission to use their record 'Get Down' by James Arthur

Dear Syco Music,

We are A-Level students and we are writing to requesr your permission to use one of the latest tracks by James Arthur. This track we wish to use is Get Down
With your permission, this track woulld be used in or current A-Level Media Studies project, which involves creating a music video to a popular music track as well as producing an album and a magazine advert for the artist.
If we received your permission, this track would only be used in an educational context and be viewed by our media class, our teacher and the OCR exam board moderator. It would not be released to a large audience.
The artist and your company would of course be fully recognised throughout pre-production and the final video itself. A copyright notice with wording supplied by you can be included in the records of the project. If this is required, please send full details.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Jamie Friend.

Costume Mood Board

This is the final outfit we have decided on as a group to use for our artist. Its very stylish and will attract our target audience due to it is what is on trend at the minute for our target audience which I believe that it will be very appealing to them.

Lighting Mood Board

I have created this mood board to look at the contrast of low and high key lighting. Lighting is a very important function in mise en scene as it has the power of setting the mood of the scene and a lot can be taken from the way the lighting is. This is why I think it needs to be an important focus in our music video.

Production Diary 3

I have currently been looking at different music videos in the pop and RnB genre. These have helped me identify key conventions of a successful video and what isn't so successful. It has also helped me look at some ideas for our music video and what we could apply to our music video. This has helped me have an idea and broadened my knowledge of what are key conventions in music videos.

Textual Analysis - Drake 'Headlines'

Production Diary 2

I have been doing much more focused research on the genre of pop and also have done a star profile. Doing the research of history of pop will help me see how far pop has come and what it used to be like. This helps me compare to what we are going be using and conventions that are going to be in our video, and how it was a few years ago.

Our Influences

History Of Pop

Pop music has not always been deemed as appealing to just youngsters. In the 1920's the term pop music come about and abbreviated the word popular. At this time the more popular music was jazz based music and it mainly appealed to much older people, who went to dances ect. However much higher class people listened to music rather then lower class due to they had the money to afford radios and to go to discos.

This all changed when it come to the 1970's disco music was much more popular and appealed to a much younger age range who went clubbing and raves, type of songs were 'play that funky music', 'rock the boat' and 'dont stop 'til you get enough. This era a lot more people were listening to music due to it was much more easier to access music and it wasn't deemed as posh anymore.

When it got to the 90's pop music blew up and become a very very popular genre and there was not specific type of music that was involved. Music by artists such as 2Pac, Oasis and Snoop Dog was very popular.

To this day and age pop music has evolved and is mainly focused on teenagers and very similar boppy music. Artists such as 'The Vamps, Justin Bieber and One Direction are very popular. This has evolved over time and the target audience has changed over time.
